“Thanks so much – if not for my volunteer my experience of chemo would have been much less easy. She has made a total difference to my weeks. It relieved me greatly to have my groceries bought regularly.”

“I am so grateful for Prairie Hospice and the care, physical and emotional, that I have received. Thank you!”

“It is a fantastic organization and I am very lucky to have people willing to volunteer to help our family during this stressful time. Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!!!”

Hospice Without Walls

“Hospice without Walls” provides non-medical care and support for you in your home by matching trained volunteers with clients and providing consistent relationships with the same volunteer. All of our highly qualified volunteers have undergone the standard Criminal Record Check, been interviewed by our team, provided references, and committed to the intensive training program. The instruction includes medical background information, psychosocial, emotional and comfort care, issues of family and diversity, communication, and self-care.

Hospice client service volunteers may do the following:

  • Provide companionship and emotional support
  • Accompany to appointments, errands, social outings, walks
  • Assist with collecting and recording of life stories
  • Provide a variety of non-medical comfort measures
  • Offer respite for caregivers
  • Assist with light meal preparation

What volunteers cannot do:

  • Give medications
  • Offer services related to the “Activities of Daily Living” (no lifting, transferring, bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding.)

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria are somewhat flexible to ensure that those at end-of-life, with non-curative illness are provided with support in their homes.

At this time, we are only able to serve clients within the city limits of Saskatoon.

Access and Referral Process

Prairie Hospice Volunteers offer 4 hours per week of their time. Volunteers work within a timeframe of 9 am – 9 pm.

Referrals may come from various health-related agencies on behalf of individuals (or their families) facing end-of-life or having non-curative illness. A phone call or email is all that is required to initiate the referral process, which will involve a home visit and an assessment by the Volunteer Coordinator.

We thank you for understanding that we will not be able to accommodate every referral. We will continue to train more volunteers each year, adding to our ability to respond to more requests.
